In 2013 there was an unprecedented legislative gun-control push in California. While Governor Brown vetoed the worst proposals, several new gun-control laws were signed. These new laws, along with several passed in previous years, all took effect in 2014. Collectively, they have a broad effect on California’s regulatory scheme. Some of the new laws carry serious consequences, even for inadvertent violations.

Among many other new topics, the updated 2nd Edition covers:

  • New restrictions on “large-capacity magazine conversion kits”
  • How long guns are now automatically registered at the time of purchase from a dealer
  • The lead hunting ammunition ban
  • Limits on Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) delays
  • The new Firearm Safety Certificate requirement
  • An expanded discussion of how firearm carry laws apply to law enforcement
  • The new firearm storage requirements
  • Detailed coverage of the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA)
  • The ban on the carry of non-handguns
  • New laws regulating the carry of long guns in public
  • Clarification and explanation of the new registration requirements for long guns
  • A more detailed history of California’s “assault weapon” law

The 2nd Edition also has over 100 pages of new tables and illustrations to simplify the law and help you understand how the rules may affect you.

Watch For Future Legal Updates here!

While the vast majority of information in this book is timely and is currently applicable, and although the majority of California’s firearms laws do not change year to year, we are aware that to some degree California firearms law changes annually, and that federal firearms law changes occasionally.

To address these changes, and to cover other more specialized firearms law topics that are not covered in the book due to narrow public interest and space limitations, the Author makes legal updates and supplemental legal memorandum available to address forthcoming or applicable changes in the law.

The legal memos periodically posted on the links page here address all the changes in the law that have taken or will place after the publication date.

Also, please subscribe to our eBULLETins to receive updates about the effect of legislation that is proposed or enacted, and to read the Author’s weekly CalGunLaws Blog

In the event of significant changes in the law, new editions of the book will be published as necessary and appropriate.
